Topic: No Condemnation in Christ
Romans 8:1 is a shout of victory of the believer. Paul is concluding his second major section of the letter to the church in Rome. This section addresses the struggle man has with sin and the only way to obtain victory over sin is through Christ. The word “therefore” at the beginning of chapter 8 is a key word that will sum up all that has been said since chapter 4. Because of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, we can live in the newness of life that Christ gives to those who call upon His name for salvation (6:1-11, 10:8-10).
Sometimes it is difficult to comprehend Paul’s message because we struggle with law and grace. In order to enjoy victory and grace, we need to understand how law and grace work together in bringing us to Christ.
The example Paul gives in 7:2-4 helps us understand the freedom of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. In marriage, one is bound by law until the husband or wife dies. Upon death, the one living is free from the law. Paul tied this illustration of how one is bound to the law of God until one dies. In this situation, Jesus is the one that died. Therefore, His death provides freedom from the bondage of the law.
Romans 7:5 explains Paul’s focus on the law as leading to sin and death: “For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were brought to light by the Law, were at work in the parts of our body to bear fruit for death.” The law reveals sin and the need for a savior which Paul calls the “way of the Spirit” (7:6).
Paul’s argument from Romans 7 transitions in chapter 8 to a rejoicing over the change the gospel makes in the lives of those who believe in Jesus. The chapter concludes by confirming, in the strongest terms possible, that believers can never be separated from God’s love.
As a believer in Christ, you have every reason to shout for joy.
See you Sunday!
