Recognizing a Critical Spirit

A few weeks ago a young lady at church gave me a compliment. Those few words made my day. Days later when I remembered her compliment, it still made me smile.  And it got me thinking about the power of words. In today's society we spend more and more time on social media arguing and insulting each other. We seem to be stressed out and short fused—creating a critical spirit which is growing in our country. Let us be reminded of Ephesians 4:29,  “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear”.

And as Christians we are called to build each other up. So before we speak, we should ask ourselves whether what we are about to say will build someone up or tear them down. “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thess. 5:11).

Here’s a helpful acronym T.H.I.N.K.

Ask yourself the following questions:

T - Is it True?

H - Is it Helpful?

I - Is it Inspiring?

N - Is it Necessary?

K - Is it Kind?

Why are we being so hard on eachother right now? There’s a lot of uncertainty in our world today, a global pandemic, the unsteady economy, political tension and inflation just to name a few. All these create fear, anger and confusion. They are Satan's tools to keep us from seeking and pointing to God. If we focused more on edifying one another and glorifying God, the world would be a much better place. Let’s start looking for the best in each other. THINK before you speak.

In Christ,
