Growing Deeper

John 10:10 says “the thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy..” Satan is easy to fall victim to. He is ruthless in his attack. Life can be overwhelming, depressing, and challenging. Fortunately, the verse doesn’t end there. It continues with “I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” I am incredibly thankful that He came to give me life. An everlasting life. A hope beyond this world. Friend, I hope you have found that too. If not, I urge you to seek wise counsel within our church to initiate your relationship with Christ. If you have, sister, don’t stop there. I urge you to take a step farther in your relationship with Him. How do you do this?

To deepen your relationship with Christ, pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:16) and read the Word daily (Joshua 1:8). Also seek Christian friendships in the church. With 150 people on a typical Sunday, that might be intimidating. There are a few simple ways to know others: attend church events, join a Sunday school class, commit to a small group, or sign up for the mentoring program.

I have experienced positive results in all of the above. I could spend pages on each program but would like to highlight the small group program. If you are new to this idea, like I was, you may be unaware of the opportunity or confused about the process. A small group is a group of believers in a similar life stage who study God’s word and do life together. My small group consists of five couples in the early stages of marriage and family. We meet monthly over dinner in our homes to discuss a Bible study. The Bible states in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” In this group, is where my relationship with Christ strengthens. I have a deeper understanding of scripture and love of His attributes. My group helps me connect stories within the Bible and challenges me to apply the teachings to daily life.

Is the idea of a small group too big for you? Try the women’s mentoring program! Whether you are on the mentor or mentee side it is a valuable experience. One benefit is the accountability partner. Much like a diet plan, we are more successful with an accountability partner. They can hold you to the expectations of reading the Word and taking time for prayer. They can also walk beside your life’s mountains and valleys. James 5:16 says “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another..”

Dear friend, I encourage you to seek fellowship among believers. Make an effort to do this regularly.  If you are not intentional, time will slip away. You will be bombarded with life, sin will creep in, and you can be easily defeated. With a small group or mentor, you can draw nearer to Christ. Seek these opportunities by contacting the church office.

Hebrews 10:24-25 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
