Atomic Habits

I recently read a book titled Atomic Habits. While this book is not one you’d find in the Christian section of the bookstore. I don’t say this lightly, it is well worth the read and easily applies to the Christian’s lifestyle.

We all have daily habits. Some may be considered productive while others not so much. In fact, most things we do on a daily basis are all habits, wouldn’t you agree? We’ve done them so long that we don’t even realize we’re performing a habit. For example, you probably have a daily routine of hygiene habits. Setting an alarm clock is a habit for most people. Going to church on Sunday is also, hopefully, a habit. These are all good habits. What about habits you’d like to break or even new habits you’d like to start? How does one go about doing this? The short answer is with intentionality.

I’m going to share only a couple of my takeaways from Atomic Habits, but I do recommend you read it if you’re interested in more…I’ll say it again, it’s a very good read. I’d also love to chat with you about it, if you do choose to read it.

Here’s a doodle page of my notes from Atomic Habits.

The first piece of advice I want to share with you is that it only takes a 1% increase everyday to get better at something. That seems doable doesn’t it? This takes the pressure off. The excuses can just be put aside. Just as he said, “You get what you repeat.” The good news? We don’t have to do this on our own. Jesus is our resource. He wants to help us become more like Him. He wants to have a closer relationship with us. The fact is, we can’t do it on our own.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1

The second take away was to actually track your progress. For example, I want to read my Bible everyday. So I keep track on my calendar and therefore, I can see my progress. Did I miss a day? Three days? Then I start again. This activity is so eye opening and really is a game changer.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

This one is my personal favorite:

"For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, 'Fear not, I am the one who helps you.’" Isaiah 41:13

He is holding your hand! He’s the ONE that HELPS YOU!!

Because of Jesus,
