We recently had the privilege of watching our oldest son graduate from Air Force Basic Training. And one thing I realize is no matter how old your child is, a mother’s heart aches for them. We celebrate with them; we pray over them. We want them to succeed; to grow old with someone they truly love. We long to protect them from this evil world—even when they are in their 20’s and taller than you. But I also know rescuing them from the hard parts of life only robs them of opportunities. Opportunities to grow, to become resilient and to find who they truly are in this world.
And as I’ve pondered over this Easter season, I find myself looking at Easter through the eyes of Mary. As she stood at the foot of that cross in agony for her child, the one she birthed... did the sound of the hammer hitting the nails that pierced his hands and feet, pierce her heart? He was beaten beyond recognition, yet she still saw her child. And as the blood rolled down his face from the crown of thorns placed upon his head, she must have wondered if there was any other way. Could she see through her own tears to see His plan? She couldn’t save Him from this evil world. It was He who was saving her. It was His plan for forgiveness, grace and redemption for you and for me. Did she see the bigger picture or did she simply see her son?
A mother’s heart desperately wants to fix difficult circumstances for her children. However, God has a purpose and plan for each and every child. As mother’s we are called to be their prayer warriors, to cry out to God on their behalf and wait in expectation.
“For this reason I bend my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God.” - Ephesians 3:13-19
Love in Christ,
