The Love of God

What is Valentine’s Day to you? A day to get flowers and candy? Maybe a special date night at your favorite restaurant? Instead of focusing on your Valentine, let’s focus on love.  What is love? The dictionary defines love as a deep affection for someone.

Love is action. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” The key to understanding Jesus’ love is the word “gave.” He gave His only son for us. He gave us eternal life because of His love for you and me. If you were the only one on earth, He still would have sent His son for you. Let that sink in. Can we fully comprehend the depth of His love for us?

Love is giving, not getting. John 13:1 says, “Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” He came to this world to give his life for our sins. God gave His Son, and Jesus freely went to the cross so that we could live life eternally with Him. He gave the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I might have eternal life. And that is the example of the love that we should have for one another.
