Just a Thought

Topic: Mustard Seed of Faith

Matthew 17:20 says “And He said to them, ‘Because of your meager faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.’”

Prior to this statement, the disciples were frustrated due to their lack of removing a demon. Like the disciples, we want to move directly to the big stuff of faith because it gratifies our flesh. In our fleshly pride we want to have the biggest and the best. We want to move those mountains for God.

A mustard seed is a very small seed, but it grows into a very large plant. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus is saying that with this small amount of faith, they could, and we can, do great exploits for God. A little faith can have incredible results. Or to say it like this, “a little faith can go a long way.”

Here is where the rubber meets the road. “Faith in what, or in who?” The faith we need, and the faith the disciples needed wasn’t to be found within themselves. It isn’t to be found in their or in our abilities or capabilities, but rather it should be found in the Lord God and in Him alone.

We don’t need a lot of faith in our ability, we just need a little faith in God and in His ability. When we have such faith, the results will be great. It was this faith that those within God’s Hall of Faith possessed (Hebrews 11).

I believe that God gives us the exact amount of faith that we need. As we exercise the faith He gives, it will increase and then we will see mountains move.

Faith is what brings God’s gift from the spiritual realm into the physical realm. We see this in the writer of Hebrews description of faith.

“Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Everything the Lord does for us and through us is accessed through faith.
